DeLallo Organic Whole Wheat Pasta
At DeLallo, we take our passion for food seriously. It wasn't easy finding the perfect whole wheat pasta for our brand, but we did it, and we boast 100% whole grain (meaning no blends or additives). With a semolina-like texture and a true toasty, nutty whole wheat flavor, we've accomplished the impossible: a pasta that is as healthy just as much as it is delicious!
Welcome Our Whole Wheat Pasta
Over the last decade, whole wheat has found its way back into our kitchens with everything from grainy, fiber-rich breads to nutty, oatmeal muffins and cereals. In recent years, whole wheat shines in a myriad of ways: more than health-conscious recipes, but gourmet recipes too. At DeLallo, we realized the demand for a healthier, whole-wheat pasta, but decided to take a different approach. We made whole wheat both healthy and delicious!
Wheat & Water
Often whole wheat pasta is associated with an unpleasant, gritty texture much like that of “cardboard,” as many consumers noted when the whole wheat boom began. To make sure our pasta lived up to the DeLallo name, we wanted to get it just right. Our pasta is made solely from wheat and water, without preservatives or additives.
Our Organic Whole Wheat Pasta begins as hard durum wheat from the sunny fields of Puglia—a region known as, “The Breadbasket of Italy.” From there, we expertly mill our whole grains for the ideal consistency, a texture similar to that of traditional pasta. This detailed milling process creates a desirable consistency, unlike many whole wheat pastas that tend to overcook and become gritty.
Bronze vs. Teflon
We extrude (or form) our pasta with bronze plates, a traditional method of pasta-making that gives each noodle a rougher surface to hug your sauces. The more popular method of pasta extrusion is to use Teflon, or plastic, because it results in a higher volume of production, meaning more cost efficiency. But this creates a smoother pasta, lacking that superior texture. And after all, what’s more important to pasta than its sauce?
Whole Grain vs. Whole Wheat
DeLallo Organic Whole Wheat pasta is made with 100% whole wheat, and therefore, also 100% whole grain. Wheat is one of many types of whole grain. (For instance, some others: rice, barley, corn, millet, buckwheat, etc.) Many pasta brands use blends of grains to make up their pasta, meaning it isn’t “100% whole wheat” but a “whole grain blend.” Don’t be fooled by brands that boast “whole grain” status without checking them out yourself. Multigrain products and single-grain products can offer the same amount of nutrition. We believe in remaining true to our Italian food philosophy—just a few, simple, authentic ingredients make the best meals.
Healthy Whole Wheat Goodness
When a product is described as “whole grain,” this means all three parts of the kernel are used—the bran, the germ and the endosperm. Refined products have both their bran and germ removed. The bran and germ are the outermost part of the wheat kernel, the part that contains the most nutrients. Our Organic Whole Wheat Pasta boasts 2x the amount of dietary fiber (than regular semolina), making it an excellent choice for the health conscious consumer. Check out our package for the Whole Grain Stamp presented by the Whole Grains Council.
