The story of the Organic San Marzano Tomato begins in the 18th century on the slopes of Mount Vesuvius. The area’s rich volcanic soil, favorable Mediterranean climate and sustainable farming methods are ideal for producing this certified organic, vertically cultivated, aromatic plant. The fruit is intensely red with thick but tender flesh, delicately hand-harvested at the peak of ripeness in the hot, dry months of August and September. The oblong plum-shaped tomatoes are described as uniquely "bittersweet," as decadent as fine chocolate. They are low in sugar and acid, making them ideal for sauces because they marry so well with other ingredients. True Organic San Marzano Tomatoes are still grown in the Sarnese-Nocerino valley near Salerno. They are designated "Pomodoro San Marzano dell' Agro-Nocerino-Sarnese," and protected under the denomination of origin regulation.
