What Is Lasagna?

Lasagna is both a noodle and a layered baked pasta dish that is made with that noodle.

Sometimes we are asked: Is lasagna pasta? Yes, lasagna is a semolina pasta just like Spaghetti or Rigatoni, but instead of being extruded into shapes, lasagna is rolled out into large sheets and then cut. It is one of the oldest pastas in the world, a creation of the Emilia-Romagna region.

Lasagna, the dish, is a traditional baked pasta. Depending on regional and family traditions, it can be made with a number of different ingredients. Lasagna noodles are parboiled and then layered with sauces, cheeses and more. The traditional Lasagna Bolognese, for instance, is made with layers of meat sauce, béchamel and lasagna noodles and topped with Parmigiano-Reggiano cheese.

How To Cook Our Lasagna Noodles

Cooking lasagna noodles depends on which type of noodles you use and what recipe you make. In general, lasagna noodles can be cooked within your dish or precooked separately before laying them up. When using our No-Boil Lasagna noodles, precooking is not necessary, but your recipe must contain more liquid than a standard lasagna recipe. When cooking lasagna noodles in boiling water, you must be careful they do not stick. Avoid rinsing the noodles once removing them from the pot.
