Italian Sausage Sandwich

Whether you like it sweet or spicy, Italian sausage sandwich is an American pastime, for sure. These hearty sausages are served up with colorful peppers and onions in a mild tangy tomato sauce on a crusty Italian-style sausage roll.

  • Preheat oven to 375F.
  • Using a blender or immersion blender, purée the tomatoes. Place in a large bowl and stir in granulated garlic, basil, oregano, rosemary, salt and pepper. Set aside.
  • Heat oil in a large cast iron or oven-safe skillet. Once hot, add the peppers, onions and fresh garlic. Cook until soft, about 8-10 minutes.
  • Arrange the sausages in the skillet over top of the cooked vegetables. Pour tomato sauce over the sausages. Cover with a lid or foil and bake in the oven for 1 hour.
  • Remove the cover and stir ingredients. Cover again and bake for 1 more hour. Bake uncovered for an additional 10 minutes.
  • Remove the skillet from the oven and allow to stand for 10 minutes before serving.
  • Serve sausage and peppers on sandwich rolls.
