Savory French Toast

Take what you know about french toast and make it… cheesy! We take thick slices of crusty Italian bread and create a savory batter using egg, flour, black pepper and parmesan. We serve our savory french toast topped with our fresh-flavored pomodoro fresco marinara, a fried egg and a drizzle of fragrant basil pesto.

Ingredients

Directions

  • In a medium-sized sauce pot, warm Marinara on low. Cover and simmer.
  • Whisk 1/4 cup grated cheese with flour and half-and-half in a shallow bowl. Whisk in 3 eggs, then season with a pinch of ground black pepper. Pour remaining cheese in a large dish.
  • Coat each piece of bread by pressing into egg mixture and flipping on both sides. Once soaked through, coat slices into the grated cheese, covering both sides.
  • Heat a large frying pan on a medium setting. Add 2 tablespoons of olive oil to the frying pan. Once hot, cook each slice of bread until golden brown, about 3 minutes on each side.
  • In a small mixing bowl, prepare Pesto by mixing 2 tablespoons of DeLallo Extra Virgin Olive Oil with 2 tablespoons of Pesto. Whisk to incorporate.
  • Serve finished toast topped warmed Marinara, fried eggs and a generous drizzle of Pesto. We paired with a fresh side of baby arugula (optional).
