Kitchen and Usage Tips:
Lasagna noodles can be used to create numerous baked pasta dishes. Lasagna recipes can include such ingredients as tomato pasta sauces, mozzarella cheese, ricotta cheeses, Italian sausage, ground beef, creamy bechamel sauce, sautéed mushrooms, eggplant and roasted vegetables—to name a few. Along with the classic lasagna recipes, lasagna noodles can be used to create lasagna roll-ups, soups, skillet lasagna, crispy lasagna pizzas and more.
Lasagna noodles are wide, flat pasta noodles that can be made with straight or wavy edges. These rectangular pasta sheets are most often used in layered pasta dishes alongside cheeses, pasta sauces, meats, veggies and other fillings. Once baked up, lasagna is sliced into squares to serve right from the baking dish. There are many varieties of store-bought lasagna noodles including gluten-free, organic whole-wheat and no-boil varieties. Oven-ready, or no-boil, lasagna noodles are parboiled so they can be used in lasagna recipes without cooking first.
Yes, standard lasagna noodles need to be cooked, or boiled, before using in your lasagna recipe—unless your lasagna recipe states otherwise. Check the lasagna pasta box for cooking times. For no-boil lasagna noodles, check out our Oven-Ready Lasagna Pasta.
How do I cook lasagna noodles?
In general, lasagna noodles are cooked in the same way that most pasta is made—in a pot of salted boiling water. To prevent sticking, boil noodles in batches and do not overcrowd the pot. In most cases, lasagna noodles just need parboiled until they are soft (depending on the recipe). Once cooked, lasagna noodles can be rinsed with cool water so they are easier to work with.
Leftover lasagna noodles can be used to create stovetop or skillet lasagna. They can also be used broken up in soups. Leftover lasagna noodles can also be used to create lasagna roll-ups filled with ricotta cheese or Italian sausage.
The difference between standard lasagna noodles and oven-ready (or no-boil) lasagna noodles is that the oven-ready noodles are parboiled, or pre-cooked, before being packaged up. This means they can be used in your recipes right from the package.
