Easy Italian Marinara

An Italian recipe for our favorite simple straight-forward tomato sauce perfect for pasta, pizza, meatballs, fried appetizers and more. The key to a good marinara is slowly sautéed onions and flavorful tomatoes. Slowly sautéed onions are super tender and release a subtle sweetness, unlike crunchy pungent overcooked onions. Unlike a slow simmer, cooking tomatoes quickly preserves their fresh tartness and gives sauces a bright tomato flavor.

INGREDIENTS

DIRECTIONS

  1. In a large saucepan, heat olive oil on a medium setting. Add chopped onion and cook for 5-8 minutes, stirring consistently until tender. Add minced garlic and cook for another minute. Stir in crushed tomatoes to combine. Season with salt and red pepper flakes.
  2. Bring to a quick boil, then reduce heat. Cover and simmer for 15 minutes.
  3. Remove from heat and stir in torn basil leaves.
  4. Serve.
