What is tomato paste? Tomato paste is concentrated tomatoes. Fresh tomatoes are crushed and strained to remove the skins and seeds, then cooked to evaporate the liquid and reduced to reach the desired consistency. Tomato paste is a versatile kitchen ingredient, packed with flavor and can be used in a multitude of dishes.

What is the difference between canned tomatoes and tomato paste? Canned tomatoes contain the whole, peeled tomato packed in either a puree or tomato juice.  Tomato paste on the other hand, is a smooth, thick, rich paste that has been evaporated down to a concentrated tomato pulp.  

Is tomato paste and tomato puree the same? No, they are not the same.  Tomato paste and tomato puree are made using the same method, but they vary in consistency based on the length of time the tomato pulp is left to evaporate.   Tomato puree has more water thus making it a more liquid consistency, while tomato paste is a denser paste with less water content because it has evaporated longer.  

Can I use tomato paste instead of tomato sauce? If you are trying to make tomato sauce, you can use tomato paste. You can achieve this by mixing one part tomato paste and one part water until well blended. Season to your liking with garlic, onion, oregano, basil, etc.

Is tomato paste in a tube the same as in a can? If so, which is better? Yes, the two products are the same. How should tomato paste be stored? Unopened tomato paste can be stored at room temperature in your pantry. Once opened, its recommended to store the tube with the cap on in the refrigerator for up to 20 days.

Can I freeze tomato paste? Yes, tomato paste can indeed be frozen! This is largely due to the low water content in the tomato paste.  If you are going to freeze tomato paste tube, please note that it needs to be thawed completely before you can squeeze it.
